Five Years of Confrontation: Quo vadis, Belarus?

Belarus is living through one of the most difficult and decisive periods in its modern history. The events of 2020 left society deeply polarised, and after 2022 the country found itself on the fault line of a geopolitical rift. This divide separates Belarus from the European community not only by state borders but also by the destinies of families, communities and individuals.
The project “Five Years of Confrontation: Quo vadis, Belarus?”, initiated by the Institute for Development and Social Market for Belarus and Eastern Europe (IDSMBEE), is an open platform of online discussions with the participation of experts, researchers, representatives of democratic forces and civil society. We seek answers to key questions:
  • Where is Belarus heading?
  • Is a return to the European path possible?
  • How can the threats of the “Russian world” be countered?
  • What does independence mean in the 21st century?

Discussions held in May – June 2025:

  • Religious Communities in the Shadow of the “Russian World”
  • Between Strasbourg and Moscow: Cross-Border Cooperation of Belarusian Regions
  • Cultural and Humanitarian Expansion of the “Russian World”: Challenges and Civil Society’s Response
  • In the Trap of the “Russian World”: How to Preserve Belarusianness and Europeanness in Education
